How to clean a marble worktop

Marble worktops provide elegance and a personal touch to both kitchens and bathrooms.

So, in order to preserve their natural beauty for many years to come, we need to carry out adequate maintenance and cleaning. For that purpose, below are some guidelines to clean your marble worktops correctly.

Recommendations for cleaning marble worktop

When polished, marble worktops are less porous, therefore preventing stains from penetrating further into the natural stonework. However, we must still act quickly in the event of stains to minimise the risks.

An important factor to be considered when cleaning a marble worktop is its composition. Due to its calcium carbonate content, marble is particularly sensitive to acid solutions. Therefore, we do not recommend using vinegar and lemon.  We do recommend using neutral soaps with a pH of between 7 and 10.

Using a clean cloth, lukewarm water and a soapy solution, we can gently rub the affected surfaces until the stains have disappeared. We can also do this as part of its daily maintenance.

On the other hand, we do not recommend using metal utensils to prevent marble worktops from scratching, thereby extending the material’s durability as explained in article 10 Advantages of using marble on worktops.

Types of stains and how to clean them

Depending on the type of stain, we may proceed to clean the marble using different methods or, rather, types of solution.

  • Most common stains: Worktop stains caused by rust, wine, coffee or soft drinks can be cleaned by applying 100 vol. peroxide and rinsing with plenty of water and neutral soap.
  • Oil and fat stains: In this case, we recommend using specific products that absorb these types of stains.

In both cases, please remember to act quickly.

In order to prevent stains on your worktop, you can apply a water repellent protector. These products are designed to prevent the natural stonework from absorbing the stain.
